biography
Simon Willem Maris was a Dutch art painter and was born in The Haque in 1873. He was the son and student of the famous Dutch painter Willem Maris. During his life he lived in several cities such as The Haque, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris. He received his artistic training at Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Antwerp Art Academy in Belgium and made several study trips, for example to France and Italy.He still is well known for his portraits, mostly of women. After his marriage in 1908 he often painted his wife Cornelia den Breejen and later on also his two children, Mies and Thijs. Furthermore, Maris was a close friend of the artist Piet Mondriaan.The work of Maris is to be admired in several Dutch museums. For example in the famous Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Haque.
