Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove was born in The Hague on 28 October 1790. As a child he was trained by his father, who was a gilder and frame maker. Afterward he took up an apprenticeship with Joannes Henricus Albertus Antonius Breckenheijmer (1772–1856), a painter of stage scenery.
